People start open-source projects for many reasons, but they usually begin with a passion for code, science, knowledge, art, design, social justice or something else. Whether a hobby project by a single maintainer or a project with many maintainers, open source is powered by people who love and care about building solutions.
But what makes a successful open-source project? Are the technical merits alone enough to warrant success, relevance, and longevity? How do factors like user experience, building for sustainability, interoperability, and community management play into an open-source project's success?
This talk will discuss the many factors contributing to an open-source project's success and long-term sustainability and the many balancing acts maintainers face on a regular basis. We will also dive into how we can continue to empower developers, users, and maintainers in the current shifting landscape of "all things AI and LLMs," not at the expense of the open-source ecosystem but to amplify and sustain its success.

Tania is the director of Quansight Labs, an organization that builds and maintains sustainable open-source projects and communities, mainly within the PyData ecosystem. She is also a director of the PSF (Python Software Foundation) and a member of the PyLadies Global Council. She is passionate about open source, its community, and building tools for developers and data scientists.
